i am charmaine
my story - From 'Mouse' to mentor
Growing up in South Africa as a quiet, shy child, I learned early on the expectations of a female in a patriarchal world. Known as 'Mouse,' I remained in the background, too hesitant to carve my own path or imagine a future beyond expectations.
From a young age, society told me my destiny was predetermined, limited to roles that never matched my aspirations. My peer group and I were told ‘we would only ever be secretaries' and ‘girls like us should be seen and not heard’!
However, life is about transformation and finding one's voice amidst the silence. My pivotal moment came while negotiating in a male-dominated room, where my opinions were dismissed.
It was a wake-up call.
I was at a crossroads: continue to hide or fight for the life I deserved.
Choosing the latter, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and tenacity.
Embracing every challenge, I moved to a new country as a single mother, pivoted careers, and pursued education while climbing the leadership ladder in the pharma industry. Each step was a testament to a belief in myself that I never knew existed. From 'Mouse' to mentor, I reshaped my reality, proving that it's not where you start but where you decide to go.
Today, I am a mentor and coach for others, guiding them to unleash their potential and navigate their transformation journeys. If I, a shy child growing up in patriarchal South Africa—nicknamed ‘Mouse’— can become an inspirational, fearless leader, so can YOU.
